The  Little Times

Dear Parents, students and friends,

Welcome to our first newsletter for this scholastic year.  I hope that you all enjoyed your summer break.  At school we are already working on a number of projects which you will read about in this Newsletter.

20th Anniversary (1986-2006)

This year our school is celebrating its 20th Anniversary.  In order to commemorate this, we are offering special discounts on Kindergarten and Junior School registration fees.

Comenius Project

Once again, our school is taking part in  a Comenius Project.  The project is entitled “Our European Heritage”.  Our partner schools arev in England, Germany, Cyprus, Poland, Gran Canaria, Romania, Hungary and Belgium.  Our Mascot for this project is Dumink the Dragon.  The actual 3d model of this dragon was done during Art/Craft lessons with the Junior 4s.  In this project, all the pupils in our school will develop an awareness of the diversity of cultures within the countries of our partner schools.  The students in the different schools will communicate and share their work in a range of formats and mediums.

Parental Skills Programme

At present a Sedqa representative is conducting a parental skills programme.  As we had more demand than we could accommodate, another programme will be starting later on. Those parents who had not sent in their application form at the beginning of the year but are still interested in following the next course, please let us know.

Swimming Lessons

This year we will be taking all our students for swimming lessons at Razzett tal-Hbiberija once again.  During these sessions, the children will be taught  to swim professionally by a qualified instructor.  I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those parents who offered to accompany the class teachers on these outings.  Your help is greatly appreciated.

Christmas Concert

This year our Christmas Concert is going to be held on the 15th December at St.Aloysius College.  The exact time will be announced later.

Strange - Is it not?

A pin has a head but has no hair.

A Clock has a face but no mouth.

Needles have eyes but they cannot see.

A hill has a foot but no knee.

A watch has hands but no fingers.

Boots have tongues but are not singers.

Rivers run though they have no feet.

And a saw has teeth but cannot eat.

I attend basketball training every Wednesday and I have three hours every week but every now and then I also take part in some tournaments in the weekend where we play against other clubs.

During the first hour and a half our coach is called Kathleen and during the last hour and a half we train with another coach called Steve.  To play basketball you need basketball shoes and a special ball used only for basketball.

Reptiles

Reptiles are species which we don’t know much about. We do know a few things. These are the facts about reptiles.

Reptiles are the first animals to live on land. They were known as dinosaurs. The first dinosaurs were not very large. Most of them were plant-eaters but there were also a few meat-eaters. The meat-eaters ate dragonflies and other small insects and sometimes even a small lizard.

As dinosaurs evolved so did their height and weight. The meat-eaters had grown bigger and many of them, like T-Rex, ate the other dinosaurs. The plant-eaters grew armour to defend themselves. Some grew spiked plates and others clubs on the end of their tails. We don’t know exactly how the dinosaurs died. The most common theory is a meteor. Others said because of the lack of  food.

What we know is that reptiles are still around today in forms like crocodiles and lizards. In myths reptiles are considered dangerous and are given names like dragons and sea serpents. Reptiles are cold-blooded and so lay eggs.

Although we see quite a lot of reptiles, reptiles are dying and so we must preserve them as a link to the past.

My School Photo Album

Opening the front page I see a small child wearing a white t-shirt and a beige pair of shorts. That’s me on my first day at school. From that day so many things have happened but one thing for sure, time flew by!!

I started at  kindergarten. There I made my first friends. It was all a new experience. We did lots of activities. Looking back, I see Christmas concerts and the funny costumes. It was such fun!!

After that on to  the Junior school. There, work started getting harder but all the teachers who taught me during  these years were all great. I learned lots of things and made lots of friends. My friends and I celebrated our First Holy Communion and Confirmation together. During these years we went on many outings. We went for swimming lessons and to many cultural outings as well. Now all of us can swim well.

Now this is my last term at Little Angels. In two months times I’ll be sitting for the Junior Lyceum and Common Entrance Exams. I am really doing my best. I would like to thank all the teachers for all the hard work and the love they gave us. Let’s see what the last photo of my album will be. I hope I’ll be as happy as I am at Little Angels.

The Fat Boy

Once upon a time,

There was a boy named Peter.

He was a very fat boy

And quite a hungry eater.

No matter what you give him,

He gobbles it quickly

And he eats so fast that,

He’ll make you feel sick.

Normally he would eat,

A large quantity of food

And he would eat like a pig

If he’s not in a good mood.

After eating all his food,

He still wouldn’t leave  his seat,

Because then comes dessert,

For Peter to eat.

Normally dessert would be

A gigantic, tarty, cake.

Chocolate is Peter’s favourite so

That’s the flavour his mother has to bake.

From all the food there is,

Peter’s favourite is meat

So that ‘s why on his plate,

He usually finds meat to eat.

Peter’s mother kept buying lots of food,

So the family was becoming quite poor.

And Peter got so fat.

That he couldn’t fit through the kitchen door.

CHILDREN’S WORKS.

The Garden

Auntie Carmen lives at Bidnija. She has huge garden around the house. Uncle Paul looks after the garden. Everyday he finds a lot of work to do. In the garden there are plenty of trees like orange, lemon, apple and peach trees. All around the garden he has planted olive trees.  Apart from the trees there are many different types of flowers and plants. In the morning we can hear the birds singing and at night sometimes we can hear a cricket. I like watching the colourful butterflies flying all over the flower beds. The smell of mint and of marjoram is incredible. When it is windy the flowers sway gently to and fro. The shady trees make a swishing sound. We can enjoy watching the beauty of nature in this garden. In the garden the air is fresh and it is so peaceful!

The Hungry Rat

One day I saw a rat

Scampering down the street;

And it looked like it wanted

Something to eat.

I brought some cheese

For the hungry rat,

So it took one bite

And grew really fat.

It took another nibble,

And grew really tall

So soon I realised

That it was going to fall!

I should have left it alone

So it wouldn’t grow tall and fat,

But I can’t change the part

And I am now squashed by a rat!

My Grandpa

My grandpa’s name is George Bonello and he lives in Qormi. He is sixty-two years old. His hair and eyes are brown. He is tall and thin. He likes to fix cars in his garage. When he is hungry he hates to wait for the food to be cooked. My grandpa has a field and he grows grapes in it. He likes to go for a walk with his brother. In summer my grandpa and I go  diving and swimming. I like visiting my grandpa’s house because I always learn something new from him.

Season

Winter sometimes brings the snow,

And icy winds that blow and blow.

It often brings rain and ice.

I don’t think that’s very nice!

And why is Spring so nice?

Fruits and flowers and butterflies.

Everything grows anew,

Outdoor fun for me and you!

Summer’s fun in many ways,

That’s when I have my holidays.

Playing games on sand, in sea,

Lots of ice-creams for my sister and me.

Some may like it - some may not

Autumn’s not really that hot.

The weather starts to get cool.

And this is when I return to school!

So here are a few reasons

Why you can enjoy all seasons.

They are different and that’s fun!

Something all year to please everyone!

Spring

Spring is the season which comes after winter and before summer. In spring a lot of plants and flowers grow. During spring, buds grow on the trees. A lot of animals and insects wake up from their long sleep in winter. Most of the birds return from other countries to enjoy the warm weather. In spring we see a lot of colourful butterflies flying around in gardens. During this season the countryside is greener and families start going out for picnics. In spring the weather starts getting warmer. People wear lighter and brighter clothes. During this season we celebrate Easter. On the Wednesday following Easter many Maltese families go to Marsaxlokk to celebrate the feats of Saint Gregory. I like spring because I enjoy the beauty of nature.

Number 9 - Year 2005/2006

The  Little Times

Dear Parents, students and friends,

Welcome to our first newsletter for this scholastic year.  I hope that you all had relaxing summer holidays. At school we are already working on a number of projects which you will read about in this Newsletter.

COMPUTER LAB

This year we changed all the computers in our computer lab. We have also increased the number of computers in the lab so that there will be less children per computer (2 children per computer). We have also introduced more educational software in order to make IT more fun but at the same time also more worthwhile.

COMENIUS PROJECT

As our previous Comenius project is over, we are now working with a number of schools abroad to start another project.  Hopefully, if everything goes through, our project will involve more or less the whole school.

SWIMMING LESSONS

This year we will be taking all our students to swimming lessons at Razzett tal-Hbiberija once again.  During these sessions, the children will be taught to swim professionally by a qualified instructor.  I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those parents who offered to accompany the class teachers on these outings.  Your help is greatly appreciated.

Personal Social Development

This year we have introduced P.S.D. as a subject as from Junior 1.  In Juniors 1, 2 and 3 P.S.D. (Personal and Social Development) is integrated with subjects like Religion and Science while in Juniors 4, 5 and 6, although it is still integrated with these subjects as well as with Media, P.S.D. is also tackled as a subject on its own.  In fact, in Junior 4, 5 and 6 the students follow this subject on a textbook as well.  P.S.D. is also integrated with the Sedqa courses. All our students, from Junior 1 to Junior 6 follow the Sedqa books which deal mainly with Personal and Social issues.  Sedqa personnel also organise P.S.D. courses for all Junior 3 and Junior 5 students.  There will also be a Parental Skills talk for the parents of students in Junior 5.

MUSIC LESSONS

This year we have also updated our Music syllabus.  We will be introducing music appreciation and more knowledge about musical instruments and some basic information about history of music.  The higher classes will also be making their own musical instruments.

Junior Lyceum and Common Entrance Examinations 2005.

We are proud to inform you that during the last Junior Lyceum Examination session, our school obtained 100% pass rate.  A good number of boys also made it to the Church Schools.

CHRISTMAS CONCERT

This year our Christmas Concert is going to be held on the 16th December at St.Aloysious College.  The exact time will be announced later.

As usual all the school will be taking part.

Once again, this year, the Kindergarten will have their own concert.  All the Kinder 1s and Kinder 2s will be taking part. The Kindergarten concert will be held on the 16th December at St.Aloysius College.  Further details will be announced later.

Myself

My name is Jodie Pccinino and I am seven years old.  My favourite colour is purple.  I like going to drama lessons and I like arts and craft as well.  At  home I like to go in my room, close the door and start singing.  When I grow up I would like to be a singer.  My best friend is Kelly Spiteri.  In summer I like to go to the beach.  I like to do my homework in my room at around six o’clock.  After school I play with my brother and watch television.  My favourite television programme is Scooby Doo.

by Jodie Piccinino Junior 3

One of my favourite rooms in our house is my bedroom.  I am very pleased to have a bedroom all to myself, a room I can call my own.  Infact I spend much of my free time in my bedroom.

My bedroom is on the first floor.  It has a small window which looks on to the beautiful small yard which is full of fresh green plants.  The first thing I do in the morning, is to open my bedroom window so that the pleasant smell of the flowers enters my room.  When I open my window I let in the fresh air and sunshine.

In my bedroom I have a single bed, a wardrobe, a computer desk and a bookshelf.  They are all made out of oak wood.

My book shelf holds some of my toys, my books and some of my Manchester United souvenirs.  The desk is near the window.  Here I do my homework, study and play on my computer.  I always like to keep the desk and the shelves very tidy.  I like the soft furnishings of my bedroom very much because they have the badge of Manchester United on them.  On the walls of my bedroom I have some posters of Manchester United players like Rooney, Ronaldo and Van Der Sar.

I like my bedroom very much because it is very airy.  I always keep it clean and tidy as I feel very proud to have a room all to my self.

School has finished.  Run home fast.

It’s time to have some fun.

Do my homework.  Play with friends.

Run in the garden.  Play with dolls.

It’s time to have some fun.

Have some supper off to bed.

The day will soon be done.

The Magic Apple

Once upon a time, there lived a poor widow in the country of India.  She earned a living as a seamstress sewing wedding gowns.

One afternoon when the seamstress was designing a beautiful gown, there was a knock at the door.  The widow was curious who it could be as she didn’t have any visitors.  When she answered the door, there was nobody except a red, juicy apple lying on the door step.  How thrilled the seamstress was as nobody had ever given her such a present before but she was quite puzzled as to who might have given her the gift.

The widow ran inside very happy indeed.  She took a nibble from the apple first and in as quick as a wink of an eye she transformed into a beautiful blue bird.

The seamstress looked at herself in the broken mirror.  She was surprised to see herself as a bird.  She said, “I’ll like it as a bird.  I won’t starve to death because there are many worms wriggling around the streets!”

How happy she was as a bird flying around everywhere.  The widow who is now a bird even made some friends with other birds that flew around.

One day, when she was passing infront of an old castle, she heard a wicked cackle.  She was frightened but to be sure that she heard properly, she landed in one of the open windows.  There was the evil witch, Hocus Pocus.  The widow heard the witch say that she had put the apple on her door step and she wouldn’t be cured unless she ate more of the apple.

The widow was terrified because she even heard her say that the worms were finishing.  How the widow zoomed back to her cottage to eat more of the apple.  She pecked at the apple twice and she soon changed back into a human.

Being a bird wasn’t as fun as she thought.  That apple was a very magical apple!

The  Little Times

Dear Parents

Welcome to the third and last newsletter of this scholastic year.

During this last term our school took part in various activities.

Healthy Breakfast

The Junior 3s were invited by B’Kara Primary School to have a healthy breakfast, which was prepared by the Home Economics students.  During this activity, the children were told what should be eaten for breakfast in order to start the day in a healthy way.  This activity consolidated further the nutrition lessons which our students have as part of their P.E. Syllabus.  This activity is organised yearly for all Junior 3 students.

Cool Science

The Junior 4s, 5s and 6s attended Science workshops organised by the St James Cavalier.  These workshops which dealt with various topics such as the Solar System, the environment on Mars, the properties of light as well as polymers were led by a professional team trained by the London Science Museum.  This was a very successful activity as it made Science more alive for the students.

E.S. B. Examinations

I would like to congratulate all our students who took part in the English Speaking Board Examinations.  This year we had 45 students taking part and they all did really well.  The examiners were very pleased with the high standard of our students’ work and this was reflected in the high grades that the children obtained.  As you all know, English Speaking Board certificates will be awarded later on during our Certificate Presentation Day.  Well done to all!

Ir-Razzett tal-Hbiberija

Marathon Walk

The Junior 1s represented our School in a Marathon Walk organised by Ir- Razzett tal- Hbiberija.  During this Marathon walk, our school presented a sum of money which was collected by the children and their parents.  This year the sum collected was Lm 217.  On behalf of Ir- Razzett tal-Hbiberija, I would like to thank you for your support as this money will be going towards a project which will definitely help many children and adults with special needs.

Certificate Presentation Day

After many discussions between the teachers and the Administration, this year we have decided to change the format of our Prize Day.  In fact, even the name has changed.  From now on, this day will be called Certificate Presentation Day.  On this day, all the students will be awarded certificates.  We will no longer award prizes only to the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, Behaviour, Diligence and Best Effort.  We have decided to focus not only on Academic achievements but also on social, moral and behavioural qualities.  We hope that in this way we will lessen tension and possible elements of unnecessary excessive competition among the students.  Further details as to dates and times of our Certificate Presentation Day will be announced later.

Marathon Walk

On Friday 27th May, all the school went on our annual marathon walk to Buskett.  All proceeds from this walk go toward

the school library and software.

Teddy Bear Concert

The Kinder1s and 2s as well as the Junior 1s, 2s, 3s and 4s took part in the Teddy Bear Concerts organised by the St James Cavalier.  A team of trained musicians visited our school and organised workshops in which the children were introduced to the four orchestral families of instruments:  strings, woodwind, brass and percussion.  This was an interactive activity and the children were asked to have a go at playing the different instruments.  The musicians, who were represented by four different characters (Benny the cat who plays the clarinet, Chunky the monkey who plays the percussion, Ned the teddy bear who plays the violin and Miles the elephant who plays the trumpet) played various pieces of best loved classical music.  This activity was a great success with all the children as it definitely made them want to learn more about the wonderful world of music.

 Hans Christian Anderson’s Project

The Junior 5s took part in the activities organised by St James Cavalier on the biccentenary from the birth of Hans Christian Anderson.  The students, along with their teacher, prepared a project, which consisted of stories by Hans Christian Anderson, drawings and some biographical element.  This project, among many others, was exhibited at the St James Cavalier during an exhibition.

Musical

The Junior 4s and 5s also went to watch a musical which was put up by the Girls’ Junior Lyceum Zejtun.

Junior Lyceum and Common

Entrance Examinations.

During this last term all the Junior 6 students sat for their Junior Lyceum examinations, which were held at our school.  The boys also sat for the Common Entrance Examinations for entry into Church secondary schools.  Good luck boys and girls.  After all your hard work, you definitely deserve to do well.

Cultural Outings

During the last term, the Junior 1s visited the Toy Museum in Valletta, the Junior2s visited the Museum of Natural History in Mdina, the Junior 3s went to the Institute of Water Technology in Luqa, the Junior 4s went to Ghar Dalam and Marsaxlokk, while the Junior 5s went to the Tarxien Temples and Hagar Qim.

Swimming Lessons

The whole school went to Razzett tal-Hbiberija for swimming sessions.  This time, the different classes had various water games organised by qualified swimming instructors.

Book Fair

During this last term we also had a book fair.  This was quite a success as many parents, friends and students attended.

Congratulations

I would like to congratulate Vincienne Magri from Junior 3 who was awarded a book token from Saghtar magazine.

An Accident

I was watching television when I heard a crowd of people shouting because there was a very serious accident.

It was our neighbour’s oldest daughter.  She was injured and had serious wounds and a lot of blood.  I quickly told her mother about it.  The accident happened near her mother’s house exactly in front of it.

Her mother felt very sad and so did my father and I.  She was the only best friend I had.  I also got sick when I saw the poor child’s blood.  I even started to cry as I felt sorry for her.  I had no other best friends.  Her father quickly helped my father put her in my dad’s car so that they could take her to hospital.

I will never forget this day as it was such a dreadful experience.

Avventura li kelli f’ħajti

F’ħajti ma kellix ħafna avventuri kbar iżda waħda minnhom għadni niftakarha sal-lum!

Darba waħda kont sejjer Sqallija mal-ġenituri tiegħi meta wara ftit  li l-vapur kien ħalla l-port ta’ Malta deher duħħan iswed ħiereġ minn waħda miċ-ċmieni tal-vapur.  Għall-ewwel ma tajtx kas iżda ftit ħin wara l-baħrin bdew jiġbru lill-passiġġieri kollha fir-restorant tal-vapur.

Malajr ġriet l-aħbar li kien hemm ħruq fuq in-naħa ta’ wara tal-vapur.  M’għandniex xi ngħidu kulħadd twerwer u saħansitra kien hemm min ħassu ħażin.  Il-baħrin u l-uffiċċjali għamlu minn kollox sabiex jikkalmaw lill-passiġġieri u minn fuq il-”loudspeaker” smajna lill-kaptan tal-vapur iserraħ ras kulħadd li ma kienx hemm għalfejn iqum paniku għax il-ħruq ma kienx qed jinfirex u ġa kienu bdew jitfuħ. ‘L hawn u ‘l hinn fuq il-vapur, wieħed kien jista’ jara xi membri ta’ l-ekwipaġġ għaddejjin, jiġru fuq il-gverta tal-vapur.  Fl-aħħar waslet l-aħbar tant mistennija li kollox kien reġa’ għan-normal u li konna se nissoktaw fi triqtna lejn Sqallija.

Kulħadd ħa r-ruħ!  Meta ġejt lura Malta tgħidx kemm -il darba rrakkontajt din l-avventura lil ħbiebi.  Żgur li qatt ma ninsiha!

My Pet

My pet is a dog and its name is Spacy.  I give my pet a bowl of food and another one for water.  I had to buy a leash, ball, plastic bones, brush, shampoo etc. so it could spend many happy hours playing with these toys.

My dog wakes me up in the morning because it climbs up on my bed.  I take it for an early walk and run.  It eats dog’s biscuits for beakfast.  I change its water every day.  It always has an afternoon nap.  It also plays in the garden with its ball. I always give meat to my dog.  It sits near me when I do my homework and even when I watch T.V.

My pet is my friend.  When I feel sick it stays near me and licks me.  I love my dog very much and I think in a few days it will have some puppies and we’ll be like one big, happy family.

It-Trumbettier Maġiku

Li kieku kelli niltaqa’ mat-trumbettier maġiku u naqbad numru maġiku kont nipprova naqbad in-numru wieħed.

Jien nixtieq li d-dinja tkun fil-paċi.  Li l-gwerer kollha jieqfu u kulħadd ikun iħobb lil xulxin.  Kieku din ix-xewqa ssir realta’ ma jkunx hemm bżonn ħabsijiet għax ħadd ma jweġġa’ lil ħaddieħor u ma jkunx hemm serq u qtil.  L-ebda ġens ma jipponta l-arma lejn ġens ieħor għax kulħadd ikun jinħabb.  Il-kulur tal-ġilda ma tagħmilx differenza u kulħadd ikun l-istess.  Ħadd ma jkollu għalfejn jitlaq minn pajjiżu biex isib ħajja aħjar għax f’kull pajjiż tad-dinja jkun hemm paċi u ferħ.  Ma jkunx hemm foqra u sinjuri għax il-ġid tad-dinja jkun maqsum ma’ kulħadd l-istess.

Kemm nixtieq li din ix-xewqa tiegħi ssir veru għax kieku d-dinja tkun post ħafna isbaħ biex ngħixu fiha.

The Flood

One night Yasmin could not sleep because of the heavy rain beating against her window, After some time she got fed up.

She decided to go downstairs to get a glass of water.  Then ,when she went downstairs, she realised that the house was flooded with water.  She called her mum and dad and they both hurried downstairs.  Dad immediately opened the door leading to their shop and more water came into the house.  Yana, their neighbour, helped them mop the floor.  Then all the town people came to help them too.  Some people got some pieces of cloth from the shop and went up in a window and hung them from one building to another.  The town was so colourful!

Then everything got back to normal. Yasmin wanted to have a party and they all agreed.  Yasmin said “All’s well that ends well”  The crowd of people went under the rainbow of cloth and really enjoyed their party.  Then, they lived happily ever after.

The  Little Times

Dear Parents

The Second newsletter for this scholastic year is here already, as this term is rather short.  In fact, this term finishes on the 18th March.  During this term, we had quite a few activities going on in the school.

Carnival Party

On Thursday 3rd February we had a Carnival party, for the Juniors 1, 2and 3.  The Party was held at Razzett tal-Hbiberija. All the children were in Carnival costumes.  Various activities like puppet shows, games, and face painting were organised for the children.  This activity was a big success which will definitely be repeated next year.

Spiritual Exercises

On Monday 14th and Tuesday 15th February, the Juniors 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 had spiritual exercises at St.Theresa’s church.

English Speaking Board Examinations.

On Monday 7th and Tuesday 8th March, 2 English examiners from the English Speaking Board will be visiting our school.  This year we have about 45 candidates sitting for this examination.

Razzett Tal-Hbiberija   Sponsored Walk

On Wednesday 16th March, the Junior 1s will be taking part in a sponsored walk in aid of the Razzett tal-Hbiberija multi-sensory programme. The school will be collecting money in aid of this programme which will then be donated to Razzett by the Junior 1s.

Open Day

On Thursday 10th March and Friday 18th March we will be having Open Day at the Kindergarten and Junior School respectively. Parents, students and friends are invited.  During these days most of the children’s work will be exhibited.

Cultural outings

This term, the Junior 1s will be going to Is-Sienja Bakery in Qormi, the Junior 2s will be going to Calleja Apiaries and Farm in Burmarrad, the Junior 3s will be going to Chadwick Lakes, the Junior 4s will be going to the B’kara Local Council as well as to the Ghadira Nature Reserve, the Junior 5s will be visiting Birgu (Maritime Museum, Inquisitor’s Palace and Fort St.Angelo) and the Junior 6s will be visiting Valletta(Malta Experience, Knight Hospitalliers Exhibition and the War Museum).

Drug abuse can be prevented and addiction is a treatable illness.

From The Health and Safety Unit - Floriana

1.  SUBSTANCE ABUSE IS A PREVENTABLE PROBLEM.            We, as parents, are much more powerful than we think.  Upsetting us is the number one reason why kids do not use drugs, and kids who learn about drug risks from parents are only half as likely to start using them.

2.  GET AND STAY CLOSELY INVOLVED            with your kids’ lives as they head through middle school and into high school.  You won’t connect well with your kids about serious health issues if you haven’t been interested in the day-to-day events of interest to them  -  which test caused half the class to flunk, which of their friends got a part in the play, who lied to their parents and went to the city or downtown with older kids...

3.  BEGIN THE DIALOGUE WHEN YOUR KIDS ARE YOUNG.  Talk early and often.  It doesn’t have to be a formal “birds and bees” type discussion, but should springboard off “teachable moments”  — like an incident in their town or school, a problem in your extended family, a poplular music video or movie, or something on the news.  Set a “no-use”, expectation, including for alcohol, and make it explicit.

4.  MONITOR YOUR KIDS.  Kids whose parents supervise them closely are only half as likely to develop a drug problem.  Know with “who, what, why, where, when” of their activities, compare notes with other parents, and continue this practice as kids hit middle school, even when you no longer know all their friends, and their friends’ families.

My Last Birthday Party

Every year I celebrate my birthday but on my last birthday I had a great surprise.

It was a surprise party.  My mother told me to go to  my grandmother because she was feeling sick.  She called me to go to her home.

I spent about three hours over there and I didn’t enjoy it.  When it was nearly six o’clock my grandmother drove me home.  As soon as I opened the door everybody said loudly: Surprise!

I had a wonderful surprise and I thanked everyone.  I really enjoyed it!

We played “pin the tail on the donkey’, balloon day and we played on the playstation.

Finally the time ran out.  I told everyone goodbye.  Sadly everyone went.  I played with my presents but I realized that one of them was missing.

I really had fun on that day but I was somewhat disappointed as I had never thought that one of my friends was a thief.

Winter

Winter is the fourth season of the year and it’s very cold.  Winter starts on the twenty-first of December and lasts till the twentieth of March. The weather in winter is very stormy because it rains a lot.  We have thunder-storms and lightning.  In winter the days are short and the nights are long.  Autumn comes before winter.  Spring and summer follow winter.  In winter we wear thick clothes like jumpers, coats, tracksuits and polonecks.  In winter when it is stormy  we stay inside cosy and warm reading a book or eating hot dishes.  In winter many people go for walks in the countryside.  In winter we celebrate the feasts of St Pauls’s Shipwreck and Carnival.  I like winter because I celebrate my birthday and also that of Jesus on Christmas Day.

 A Visit to Town

It was a cold Sunday morning.  It was foggy and not so easy to see far when I went to Valletta, Malta’s capital city and of course a town when............ something very strange happened.  Let me tell you about it!

I usually always see the same things in Valletta but today nothing seemed the same.  I went because I needed a new school-bag and pocket but the normally crowded streets were empty, the shops full of cheery smiles looked sad and empty.  I went everywhere but..... where could everyone be?  I didn’t even see a pigeon when usually Valletta has more pigeons than people but neither of them seemed to be around.

I went to where the open-market usually is but, not even empty stalls!   I looked everywhere but no, nobody within sight.  Then I heard something strange behind me.  I looked round and saw a green little man surrounded by many more of his kind.

I was frightened.  I couldn’t see anyone or anything but them.  Then one of them spoke in a hight-pitched voice and said “Welcome to Valletta in the year three thousand and four!  We are pleased to see you!”  Suddenly all the fright burst out of me and I explained that I wanted to be in the year two thousand and four.

They suddenly looked bored and the same one that had spoken earlier on said in his high-pitched voice.  “You are the ninth one this week!  Eight more have already come.  There is a time puddle as you enter your old Valletta.  Go to the Valletta gates and you will find yourself in your own time.”  I kept thanking them for what felt like a thousand times then I went through the Valletta gates as instructed and found myself in the year two thousand and four.

I think it was quite an interesting morning and even though in the begining it was scary I had fun.  Bye.

King Richard’s Victory

Sorrow down in their hearts,

as they charge down the hill.

King Richard’s knights,

as they  charge down the hill

Unsheathed are their swords,

their hearts staying still.

Clatter, clatter go the horse’s hoofs,

on the gravel covering the hill.

Men and horses fall,

as arrows pass through their ranks.

The wailing of the dead,

down  near the river banks.

The sound of victory heard

after two hours fight

The roar of the lion-hearted king

a battle won with greatest might.

There was an old man

who was fond of ham

but all he got was bacon.

He told his wife,

“This ain’t no life

eating just eggs and bacon.”

So he went out one day

and heard a horse neigh;

he offered him some of his bacon:

“Don’t be so silly,

old man Billy,

all I eat is hay!”

The old man said

“It can’t be that bad,

Hay will not be making my day.”

The  Little Times

Dear Parents

Welcome to our first newsletter for this scholastic year.  I hope that you all had relaxing summer holidays.  At school we are already working on a number of projects which you will read about in this newsletter.

We would like to remind you once again  that if you would like to include any articles, poems, write-ups etc in our newsletter, please do not hesitate to contact us.

DINJA WAHDA

I would like to congratulate all the students and the teachers for their hard work last year while we were taking part in the Dinja Wahda project.  We have won the Gold award for the third time.  This year there were more schools who got this award and this means that environmental education is becoming more important in our school curricula year after year.  It is very important that from a young age , children are taught to look after our environment by learning how to reduce, re-use and recycle.  Infact at our school, we send all our paper for recycling. Children are encouraged not to waste paper and to use paper intelligently.  We also collect used batteries. Children are also taught about rubbish separation in various subjects as this will help them adopt good habits for the future.

COMENIUS PROJECT

This is our last year of  work on this project.  In fact we  will be working with the Junior 4s on a short project which will talk about a day in the life of the students.  This work which will be carried out by means of descriptive writing, drawings and pictures will be then distributed to our colleagues in Spain and Germany.

English Speaking Board Examinations.

Next March, an English examiner will be visiting our school to conduct the English Speaking Board Examinations.  This is the 9th time that our school will be holding these examination sessions.  Results are excellent every year and the examiners are always very pleased with the work the children prepare.

Swimming lessons.

This year we will be taking all our students to swimming lessons at ir-Razzett tal-Hbiberija once again.  During these sessions, the children are taught to swim professionally by a qualified instructor. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those parents who offered to accompany the class teachers on these outings.  Your help is greatly appreciated.

Christmas Concert.

This year our Christmas Concert is going to be held on the 16th December at St.Aloysius College. The exact time will be announced later.

As usual all the school will be taking part.

This year, the Kindergarten will have their own concert.  All the Kinder1s and Kinder 2s will be taking part.  The Kindergarten concert will be held on the 16th December at St.Aloysious College. Further details will be announced later.

Cultural Outings.

This term the Junior 1s will be going to San Anton Garden, the Junior 2s will be going to the Airport and to the Aviation Musuem, the Junior 3s will be going to Mosta and Mgarr, the Junior 4s will be going to Xemxija Fire Station, the Junior 5s will be going to Mdina and the Junior 6s will be going to St John’s Cathedral,  the Archeological Museum and the Palace.

The  Little Times

Dear Parents, students and friends

Welcome to the third and last newsletter of this scholastic year.

During this last term our school took part in various activities.  Our Dinja Wahda project is well and truly progressing, infact we already have enough points to qualify for the gold award.  Well done students for all your hard work!

I would also like to congratulate all our students who took part in the English Speaking Board Examination.  This year we had 40 candidates who all did really well.  The examiners were very pleased with our work and they praised all the students’ performances.

Eric Scerri from Junior 4 was interviewed by a German journalist for a children’s radio programme in Germany.  Well done Eric.

Congratulations also to Eric Micallef, Matthew Bezzina, Klein Vella, Kylie Bugeja, Christopher Camilleri and Darren Bezzina from Junior 5 and Keith Pisani, Samuel Borg and Dean Grech from Junior 4 for taking part in and winning a Kompetizzjoni Missjonarja 2003-4- Hobb lill-Ghajrek bhalek Innifsek.

During this term, our partners in the Comenius Project visited our school. The German and the Spanish school representatives were in Malta from Friday 14th to Wednesday 19th May.  Two German girls stayed with a student from Junior 3, Anastasia Fenech Buontempo.  Infact I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr. and Mrs. Fenech Buontempo for their kindest cooperation.

During this term our students worked on another part of our project that dealt with schools in Malta in the past. Various activities were organised for the students to teach them more about Education in Malta in the past. The Junior 1s, 2s and 3s, along with their teachers and PE teacher prepared a demonstration of old traditional Maltese games which they then performed infront of our Comenius partners. The children really enjoyed these games like Passju, Bocci, Bom Bom il-Bieb etc. because most of them had never heard of these games before.  This project served as a way of reviving these old games.    One of the activities which was organised by the Junior 4s consisted of a talk by relatives of two students at our school who lived their childhood during the second world war.  Mrs. Camilleri and Mrs. Brownrigg, spoke to the students about the hardships they went through during the war and how their schools were during those days.   The Junior 5s drafted a questionnaire that also dealt with schools in the past. The students in Junior 5 interviewed their grand parents about their school days.  Copies of these questionnaires as well as charts about schools in Malta in the past were given to all our partner schools.  During their stay in Malta, the teachers from these two schools visited our school and had lunch with all the staff.  We also took our overseas colleagues on various cultural outings.  The German students joined us on a trip to Gozo. This was a great experience  for our students as well as for the teachers.  The next meeting with our Comenius partners will be held in Leipzig next December.

 S.A.I.L. Project

The S.A.I.L project which is being coordinated by Ms.Maria (Jn.4) in conjunction with The University of Malta was in its final stage during the third term.  The students managed to devise various exercises on the computer.  These exercises are going to be published in a booklet called “Muscha’s favourite tricky puzzle book”.  The children really enjoyed taking part in this project which involved mainly Information Technology exercises.  The outcome of their work was excellent.  During their work, the students were observed by their teacher as well as by Ms.Michelle Caruana Dingli who is the  representative of the University of Malta in charge of this project.  As a last activity, the students, along with Ms.Maria, will be visiting the Manoel Theatre where they will meet children from other schools who also took part in this project.  Together they will discuss their work and share ideas.  This was a new and fruitful experience both for the teacher and the students.

Junior Lyceum and Common Entrance Examinations.

During this last term all the Junior 6 students sat for their Junior Lyceum examinations which were held at our school.  The boys also sat for the Common Entrance Examinations for entry into Church Secondary schools.  Good luck boys and girls. After all your hard work, you definitely deserve to do well.

CHILDREN’S WORKS.

 Is Music Important?

Music is written to express feelings like love, sadness and happiness.  From the beginning of man’s existence mankind has tried to invent musical instruments to express their feelings using music and to entertain each other.

Most probably the first instrument was the drum which would have been a piece of trunk from a tree and two branches as sticks.  Music has come a long way since then.

There are different kinds of music nowadays for example classical, pop, rock, country, jazz and many others.

Depending on the mood one is in, one chooses the music he likes.

Children are introduced to music early in life.  First by their parents singing nursery rhymes and then at school learning songs and about how music is written.

Music is very important in our lives.  We can sing and it makes us happy, we can learn how to play an instrument and by it we express our feelings.  We can dance to the music which helps us relax.

Yes music is important and it brightens up our lives.  There are people who choose to be musicians and make that their career.  Others become famous singers.  Music is truly one of man’s best inventions!

The  Little Times

Dear Parents

Welcome to the second newsletter of this scholastic year

During the first term our school took part in  various activities. The first of which was the Razzett tal-Hbiberija marathon walk.  All students collected funds for the multi-sensory project which Razzett wants to set up.  As a school, we collected Lm 118, which placed us among another 2 schools which collected most money.  Infact, the Junior 5s, represented our school in a  Marathon walk which was organised by Razzett tal-Hbiberija  in M’scala. During this walk, our school received a medal for our participation.  Four students, Chrisitina Zammit (Jn 1 ), Jessica Barbara (Jn.2), Siah Bianco (Jn 3) and Dean Grech (Jn 4) all received tokens for collecting most money.

Another activity which our school took part in was the Comenius parade which was held in Valletta..  In this parade, 3 students from junior 6 , Lara Micallef, Laura Spiteri and Luca Bellizzi represented our school. During this parade, all the schools that are taking part in a Comenius project took part.  All the students were given balloons which they flew at the Upper Barrakka.  Later on, all the students met the Prime Minister

Our school also took part in the European Language label. This time, it was the  Junior 4s who represented our school.

During the Christmas period, the Junior 6 went to sing some songs at the Hospice Movement in Balzan.  The Hospice movement offers its services to terminally ill patients.

We would also like to inform you that the school website is now up and running and for those of you who would like to visit it, the address is www.littleangelsschool.com.

We are also proud to inform you that during the last Junior Lyceum Examination session (2003) our school placed first amongst the schools in the National League table with a 96.88% pass rate.

With regards to the questionnaire we sent you some time ago, we would like to take the opportunity to thank you for your feedback.  We will be analysing these questionnaires and a detailed report will be sent to you in the future.

Speedy

Once there was a rabbit called Speedy.

It belonged to Joan and Alfred Pace.  As they had no children,  they treated Speedy like a son.  One night Speedy escaped and went out in the road.  As he had never been out  of the house before, he was very scared and did not know that there were cars around.  In fact, not much later a car sped down the road and ran poor Speedy over.

Joan and Alfred were very upset because they had lost a companion.  But luckily a year later they had a baby which helped them get over Speedy’s death.

The Vampire

Once a girl was looking around,

Searching for a pound

And when she looked back,

She got a painful smack

From a vampire

Made out of fire

So she melted as small as a dot,

And she really hated that a lot.

Is-Sbuħija tal-ħarifa

Kemm jissemmew is-sajf u x-xitwa imma lili l-iktar li togħġobni hi l-ħarifa.

Issa fil-ħarifa t-temp jibda jiksaħ.  Issa nibdew nilbsu ħwejjeġ tal-mezzu temp.  Filgħaxija jibda jiksaħ għalhekk ommna tlestina s-sodda bil-lożor tax-xitwa.  Kemm tħoss kesħa wara xi ħalba xita!  Fil-ħarifa l-bebbux iqum wara li jkun raqad is-sajf kollu.  Fost l-annimali oħra l-frieken ikunu qegħdin iħejju biex jorqdu għax fis-sajf kienu mqajmin.  L-għasafar jibdew itiru biex jiġu Malta għax fejn jgħixu jkun hemm aktar kesħa minn hawn. F’dan l-istaġun in-nies imorru għall-kaċċa bil-klieb.  Dejjem tajjeb għalih il-bidwi fil-ħarifa għax jibda jiżra’.  Imma jekk fix-xitwa x-xita tkun qawwija r-raba’ jinfaqa’ u ma jkollniex patata u ħxejjex.  Fil-ħarifa jibdew jaqgħu l-weraq tas-siġar.  Jekk bħalissa tmur fil-kampanja tara li jkun hemm ħafna ħaxix aħdar anke fuq il-blat.  Nieħdu pjaċir immorru mixja fil-kampanja.  Issa ma baqax aktar frott bħal dulliegħ, bettieħ iżda nsibu frott ieħor bħal rummien.

F’dan iż-żmien nerga’ nibda l-iskola u nara lil sħabni.  Veru nkunu ħadna pjaċir fis-sajf imma niddejqu ma nagħmlu xejn.

My Favourite Book

My favourite book is 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne.

The story is about Captain Nemo and the Nautilus.  The Nautilus was Captain memo’s submarine.  All the sailors thought that the Nautilus was a monster.

Captain Nemo and his crew met lots of fantastic adventures.  One of the adventures was when they went on a Cannibal Island.  another adventure was when a shark attacked them.  Once a giant squid stopped them.  The Nautilus sank during a terrible storm and only three people survived.

I like this book because I like to read books about adventures.

In-Nanniet Tiegħi

Naħseb li ffurtunata ftit għax għandi tliet nanniet u nħossni kburija.

Għandni nanniet min-naħa tal-papa u oħrajn min-naħa tal-mama. In-nanna Karmena li tiġi omm il-papa, mietilha ir-raġel tagħha.  Jiena ma kontx twelidt imma nafu minn fuq ir-ritratti.  In-nanna kalma ħafna u allavolja, meta jiġu l-kuġini, nagħmlu burdell qatt ma tagħti kas, qisu xejn ma ġara.  In-Nanna llum il-ġurnata għandha sebgħin sena u tgħidx kemm hi fuq tagħha.  Tinqala’ l-iktar biex issajjar il-pastini speċjalment meta nagħmlu festin żgħir ta’ għeluq sninha.

In-nanna Carolina, omm il-mamma, hi nervuża ħafna.  Jekk jitilgħulha tibda tgara l-affarijiet lejn il-bank tal-kcina u tista’ timmaġina kemm hu migruf.  In-nanna hi mir-Rabat Għawdex.  Tinqala’ biex tagħmel il-ganutell u biex issajjar.  Id-dar ma niekol xejn imma għand in-nanna dejjem niekol kollox. Il-mama qaltli li n-nanna tagħmel il-maġija.

In-nannu Joe, missier il-mama, għandu karattru kalm.  Jekk ma jarax lili jew lil oħti jmut.  Dejjem ipaxxina minn kollox u n-nanna dejjem tgemgem minn taħt.L-iktar li jħobb jara hu l-logħba tal-’Football’ u tista’ timmaġina nhar ta’ ħadd x’jagħmel.  Meta jiskurjaw l-Arsenal, li hu t-tim favorit tiegħu, jwaqqa’ d-dar bl-għajjat u l-istorbju li jagħmel.

Qabel kien joqgħod ix-Xagħra Għawdex u wara ġie joqgħod San Pawl il-Baħar, meta l-mama kellha tliet snin.  Għandu s-snien ta’ quddiem kwazi kollha foloz għax meta kien żgħir il-ħelu kien l-ikel tiegħu.  Tiċċajta kemm nidħku jien u oħti meta jaqla’ snienu għax ma jkunx jista’ jiekol!

Kemm nixtieq li n-nanniet ma jmutu qatt għax dejjem jagħtuni li rrid u qatt ma jonqsuni minn xejn speċjalment in-nannu.

Bad Games

If you see someone playing a bad game,

Do not do the same.

It could be very rude,

And the children playing it might be in a bad mood.

You’ll have to run away,

And do not say

that you are going to play,

Just quietly lay

On your bed

Pretending you are dead.

When they are done,

Tell them to play something more fun.

CHILDREN’S WORKS.

The Ghost

It was a very stormy night

Suddenly as I lay in bed I saw a ghost

I was terrified

And I told mum when I went down for my toast.

When I told her

She said I was hiding

so I went to the garden

And I saw him digging.

In the afternoon as usual

I went to have a little nap

And there I thought

How to make him a little trap.

While I was doing the trap

There was a little dim

And when I was ready

I put it in a medium-sized tin

When I went to bed

I put the trap on my bedside-table

And then the Ghost appeared

In my little brother’s cradle.

He told me not to be afraid

And not to harm him

I quickly put the trap away

When he told me he was called Tim.

Tim had been my cousin

Whose deeds I will always adore

He had died in a traffic accident

The year before.

A Holiday in Disneyland Paris

During the summer holidays my parents and I went on a trip to Disneyland Paris.

It had always been my dream to visit Disneyland so I was very excited when the day of the holiday finally came.  The plane trip took three hours before it landed at Orly Airport.  We then took a coach to our hotel in Disneyland Resort.

When we got there I couldn’t wait to go to the Park where all the fun rides and Disney characters are.  During our stay there I met Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Goofy, Captain Hook, Geppetto and many more characters.  They all gave me their autograph.  I also enjoyed visiting the shops in Disneyland because they were all magical.  It was like being in a fairytale all the time.

While we were there we went on a coach to see the sights of Paris.  We took a boat tour on the River Seine which was very interesting.  Then we visited the Notre Dame Cathedral and the Eiffel Tower.  We also saw the Arc de Triomphe and the Louvre Museum.

This holiday was like a dream come true for me.  My parents and I had a wonderful time and when we look at the photos and souvenirs we brought with us we always wish that we are still there.

Cats

So you have a pet,

Or have you ever met

A black and white cat,

Sitting on a mat.

Cats prefer their fish

In a big dish.

They can scratch you hard,

Or even scratch a card.

Sometimes they are not nice

Especially when they catch mice.

But if you give them healthy food,

They will sit quietly in a good mood.

Autumn

Autumn comes before winter and after summer.

Autumn starts on the 21st September and ends on the 20th December.

In autumn the weather starts to get cold and sometimes it rains.

We start to wear long sleeves, trousers and socks.

In autumn the leaves fall from the trees.

Autumn is the season when we change to winter time.

Schools start in autumn after the long summer holidays.

The first three days of November are autumn term holidays.

During autumn we go to swimming lessons.

I like autumn because I go back to school and meet my friends again.

Jokes

What do you call a parrot and a worm?

A walkie-talkie.

Why is 6 afraid of 7?

Cause 7, 8, 9.

Why are these numbers called seven, eight, nine?

Cause 7 ate 9.

Why do vampires have four sharp teeth?

Because they forgot their dental appointment.

Why is 1 + 1?

1+1 = window

by Daniel Fenech Junior 5

A tooth

A tooth fell out, and left a space,

So big my tongue could touch my face.

And every time I smile,

I show a space where something used to grow.

I miss my tooth as you can guess,

But then, I have to brush one less!
