This
exciting project is now in its second year and we have already started doing
a number of activities. The Junior 1s, 2s and 3s worked on story telling in
Maltese. They used two books called Pina taht is-sufan and Il-libsa ta Sina.
The teachers read the stories, then the children coloured the pictures
depicting the story and even made collages of some of the pictures. The two
books as well as the artwork were given to all our partners. Our partner
schools gave us their work and their books, which were all shown to our
students. The Junior 4s, 5s and 6s worked on the historical aspect of our
project. This was linked to Social Studies. Three famous personalities
from the past , Dun Mikiel Xerri, Sir Temmy Zammit and Dun Karm Psaila were
chosen. A folder was created using pictures and some information about
these personalities. This work was also given to our partner schools. Work
was exchanged amongst all the partner schools and in this way all the
students will be learning some history of the countries taking part in the
project. Some teachers from Hungary, Poland and England visited our
school. The Junior 4s, 5s and 6s prepared a short welcome celebration for
our colleagues.

Comenius
supports school partnerships, projects for the training of school
education staff and school education networks. It thus aims to enhance
quality of teaching, strengthen its European dimension and promote
language learning and mobility.
Comenius
also emphasizes certain important issues such as learning in a
multi-cultural framework which is the cornerstone of European
citizenship, support for disadvantaged groups, countering
under-achievement at school and preventing exclusion.
Our school
is taking part in a Comenius project entitled "OUR EUROPEAN CULTURAL
HERITAGE". Our partner schools are in England (the project
coordinator), Germany, Cyprus, Poland, Gran Canaria, Romania, Hungary
and Belgium. Our Mascot for this project is Dumink id-Dragun. The model
of this dragon was done during Art/Craft lessons with the Junior 4s. In
this project all the pupils in our school will develop an awareness of
the diversity of cultures within the countries of our partner schools.
The students in the different schools will communicate and share their
work in a range of formats and mediums, including ICT.
This
project will enable pupils to exchange ideas and collaborate together.
For example, in the first year they will be researching, retell and
share myths and legends about dragons found in Maltese Literature. This
will be explored through many subjects, such as English and Maltese
languages, Art/Craft and ICT. During this year, in the second and third
terms, we will also be producing a book with the children's own stories
about dragons. This book will also include the children's drawings of
dragons. During these 2 terms we will also be exploring this Dragon
theme through Drama. We will then produce a video of the
children acting.
Samples of
the work done during the first scholastic term can be viewed in the link
below.
In the
Second year, the students will study Heroes and Heroines, past and
present and exchange music, artwork and videos of drama.
In the
Third and last year, the students will investigate the diversity of Art
and Architecture, exchanging work and producing a calendar reflecting
the diversity of architecture.
The
project will be linked together over the three years by the mascot -
Dumink id-dragun, who will visit each country collecting sounds and
images and communicating with all the partners developing an awareness
of the rich diversity of our cultural heritage.
This will
be achieved through the commitment, interaction and friendship of the
teachers that will develop throughout the project years.
